Danny started the camera rolling as Frankie got to work. First, Frankie snatched Mrs. Parker’s lab coat, then they affixed goggles to their eyes. Then they got out a bunch of beakers and test tubes and began ordering Matt around like he was their assistant. Together, Matt and Frankie carefully measured out the borax, glue, shaving cream, and contact lens solution.

And then, Frankie sat on the stool for a long moment, staring at the tiny bottles of food coloring. Red, yellow, blue, green.

Becca leaned in close, curious. Confused. “What are you doing?” she finally asked. “And when did you become into science?”

“Cooking is just one big science experiment,” Frankie scoffed, then turned back to the task at hand. “Deciding the color,” they said, and waved Becca away. “Give me a minute. It’ll come to me.”

Becca joined Kylie in pacing around the lab table impatiently. Kylie looked like she might just jump on Frankie if it motivated them to move faster.

“It’s only been ten minutes,” Becca reminded her.

“Eleven.” Kylie crossed her arms over her chest. “How long does it take to make slime?”

“They’re a chef. I guess chefs want everything perfect . . . ,” Becca whispered, which she completely understood. She was the same way about gymnastics. “Practice makes better,” her mom always said, but Becca truly believed that practice makes perfect.

Kylie smiled.

Becca winked. No one wanted to hear Frankie start complaining again or delay them from getting to the bottom of this clue. “Come on.” She gathered the rest of the crew while Frankie continued to work and Danny filmed them.

“I wonder if there are fingerprints on these.” Danny held up the food coloring and tried to zoom in as close as possible.

“Unless your camera has infrared, you won’t be able to see anything,” Matt said.

“My camera is the best one on the market. That’s what my dad said when he gave it to me.”

“C’mon, guys. Focus. Why do you think the Game Master is making us make slime?” Miguel interrupted.

They all said their theories. Maybe they have to use the slime for something else. Maybe the slime itself was a clue. Maybe the process was the clue. They couldn’t seem to decide.

“Well, let’s try to be useful while Frankie and Matt are working,” Miguel said. “Let’s look for the zoetrope. It could be here somewhere.”

Becca and the rest of the crew combed through the science lab, then went to the sliding glass door that separated the lab from the actual classroom.

“Danny, come on,” Kylie said, pushing the step stool to prop the door open behind her. “We can check out this side of the room. Use your camera light to guide us until I can flip the switch and turn on the light.”

Danny nodded, heading off after them.

“Matt, help me,” Frankie called out.

Matt turned back to help and tripped over the step stool, knocking it over and letting the door slide shut behind him with a click.

Uh-oh!

Becca whipped around and watched as Matt scrambled to his feet and tried to slide the door back open.
